Amazon Introduces Passkeys for Enhanced Security and Convenience

Amazon has introduced an innovative feature, passkeys, to streamline and secure the login process for its customers. This new authentication method offers a convenient and highly secure alternative to traditional passwords.

What are Passkeys?

Passkeys are designed to be an easy-to-use method for signing in to apps and websites. Unlike passwords, passkeys cannot be easily guessed or written down, providing an added layer of security. Passkeys function by utilizing familiar features, such as facial recognition, fingerprint scans, or lock screen PINs, allowing users to prove their identity swiftly and securely. By employing these biometric or PIN-based methods, customers no longer need to worry about remembering complex passwords or using easily accessible information like names or birthdays.

Enhanced Security and Convenience

Passkeys offer a higher level of security compared to passwords and one-time codes sent via text messages, making them a robust defense against phishing attacks. With passkeys, the risk of accidental sharing with unauthorized individuals is significantly reduced, ensuring a more secure online experience for Amazon customers.

“This is about giving customers ease-of-use and security simultaneously in their Amazon experience,” said Dave Treadwell, senior vice president of e-commerce at Amazon. “While passwords will still be around in the foreseeable future, this is an exciting step in the right direction. We are thrilled to be an early adopter of this new authentication method, helping to realize our vision for a more secure, password less internet.”

How to Set Up Passkeys

Setting up passkeys is a straightforward process. Customers can follow these simple steps to enroll:

  1. Access Your Account: Navigate to the Amazon settings in your browser or the iOS Amazon Shopping app.
  2. Login & Security: Select the “Login & Security” option.
  3. Set Up Passkeys: Click on “Set up” next to Passkeys.
  4. Follow Instructions: Follow the step-by-step instructions provided to complete the setup process.

Once a passkey has been added to the account, users can effortlessly sign in using their passkey on supported devices or browsers. By confirming their identity through their lock screen PIN or biometrics, customers can enjoy a seamless and secure login experience.

Amazon continues to prioritize user convenience and security, ensuring customers have access to cutting-edge technologies that enhance their online interactions while safeguarding sensitive information.

“Our research shows that consumers are tired of the hassle and complexity of passwords, and they are excited to embrace passkey sign-ins, which enable them to simply and securely access online services and stand to turn the tide against the ongoing plague of data breaches and identity theft,” said Andrew Shikiar, executive director and chief marketing officer of FIDO Alliance, an industry association focused on reducing reliance on passwords. “Passkeys fundamentally shift the way we sign in to our online accounts for the better—and seeing Amazon roll out passkeys is evidence of its commitment to its customers’ time, experiences, and security across Amazon web and mobile shopping experiences.”
